Helping Menopause Symptoms with Acupuncture

Kelly came to me as she began to find her peri menopausal symptoms harder to handle. She was experiencing hot flushes, headaches and insomnia all whilst feeling unusually angry with life. She was waiting to be assessed for HRT but wanted something to help her navigate her symptoms in the meantime and take back some control over, what felt like, her very out of control emotions.

“I have been seeing Katie for a few sessions now. I first visited Katie when I had started to develop menopause symptoms - Brain fog, headaches, feeling angry, hot flushes in the night, all a pleasure to live with as you can imagine. Even after the first session I felt so much better, being able to sleep properly is so important when changes in your body are happening and Katie really help me manage all the symptoms. Since the first sessions I have then transitioned to HRT and now use Katie as more of a treat. I have also sent my friend who has really benefitted from her treatments. Thank you Katie, you made me feel normal again.”

What Kelly was experiencing are all actually very common Perimenopausal and Menopausal symptoms. However, these can be very challenging when the emotions being experienced are very much out of character for you. The two other main issues I tend to treat are Anxiety and Brain Fog. Anxiety can be particularly difficult to deal with if this isn’t something that has previously troubled you. And don’t forget Frozen Shoulder – a very common, but not understood, menopausal symptom.

As if this isn’t enough to deal with, this stage of life tends to also throw up its own issues. Your children may be getting older and perhaps not needing you as much which can present difficulties with emotions and the feelings of not being wanted or needed. Or just useful anymore. On top of this there may be pressures from aging parents and a role reversal that can be very hard to deal with as well as changes in our personal relationships. Somehow, we are expected to be able to juggle this with what can feel like a tsunami of new emotions and physical changes along with grapple with the acceptance that a period of your life is ending. And don’t forget the social pressure of being told this is a time of our lives we should be embracing and celebrating our newfound freedoms. Unfortunately, it's not always as straight forward as that.

Acupuncture can help deal with these physical symptoms, but I think most importantly it can also help with the emotional aspects of this very confusing time. Generally, people leave our sessions with their symptoms settled and an overall improved feeling surrounding their emotional wellbeing.

There is no wrong or right time to come for Acupuncture. I treat women who have chosen not to go down the HRT route but also women who need support whilst their HRT dose is being established and they are still managing symptoms. I also support women experiencing enforced Menopause symptoms due to Chemo or surgery. Acupuncture can offer support with all these stages.

Kelly found her sessions so useful she went on to recommend me to her best friend and I love it when people come to me through a personal recommendation.
